Internship 101

It’s that time of year again…..the internship hunt begins!

I’ve decided to share some tips on where I look for positions that catch my eye. My utmost favorite source (aside from personal networking) is Cornell’s own Job Search website (“CCNet” which is run through Experience.com). However, even after I’ve applied to whatever interests me on there..that’s not the end of the search!

Here’s some other useful places I look:

http://www.urbanintern.com  —lots in NYC!

http://www.internmatch.com —similar to above

http://www.craigslist.com –the personals are great once you weed through potential “fakes” or old posts. All results are local, and sometimes you can find positions on here that would be hard to search for on other sites (i.e. a PR Firm in Sag Harbor)

http://www.Twitter.com —yep! A lot of employers will tweet when they’re looking to hire. They often will hashtag “#internship” or #summerintern”…I’ve also found accounts dedicated to posting listings. I follow an account that posts Marketing/PR Jobs on Twitter. The issue with this is that it takes a bit of screening (through positions on the other side of the country and ones that require a lot of prior experience) but I’m sure there are even Twitter accounts for interns specifically. Browse and you shall find!

Even just perusing the web for companies you’re interested in working for is usually pretty helpful. That’s how I found out about a leadership conference at Unilever. They’re not looking for interns specifically, but you never know who you may meet at the conference! Look up the contact lists, send out emails..ask if they have any positions. Sometimes they do answer!

Hosting a Launch Party

It’s been a very busy week at Collective Media Group! Tomorrow night, July 26th, we’re hosting our launch party at WIP (Work in Progress), a nightclub in the South Village. The event will be a co-launch party for Collective  and Courtesan Studio, a Swavarski Element encrusted jeweler that also happens to be one of our clients.

While free to attend, our launch party encourages donations to The National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The MS Society is held closely in our hearts, as a member of the Collective team was diagnosed with MS just one year ago. In preparation of the event and it’s impact on MS, we have launched a trending topic for tomorrow’s guests. Be on the lookout for all Tweets with the hashtag: #Launch4MS 

 

As for my role in all of this, not only will all the interns be there 2.5 hours early to help set up and ensure things run smoothly, but I’ll also be standing outside of WIP greeting guests with one of the other interns and managing the guest list. I guess you could call me a bouncer for the night, though I hope I won’t look as tough. I’m really excited for the role! Over 300 people are expected to attend & I’ll get to see every single one of them as they enter our event…including BRAVO’s own Lori Zaslow. She is a both a good friend of my bosses and a client of ours. We help promote her new show Love Broker– which aired last night at 10 pm on Bravo! Love Broker is about looking for love in New York City with Lori’s help. She’s been a professional matchmaker for over 12 years!

But getting back on topic..I’ve noticed two things above all when it comes to event planning.

The First: It’s a lot of work! We need to find donors who will help offset the cost of the venue, in addition to finding food donations, a licensed liquor vendor, a DJ, dessert donors and graphic designers. Someone has to make an event flyer, Facebook page, guest list (which needs to be updated multiple times a day), and a lot more! We need to hire a printing company (luckily we know a good one) to print out fliers on high resolution paper and create the event’s Step-And-Repeat Wall that’ll be featured in all the professional photography, and oh yeah, we need to hire a photographer! With the entire Collective Media team on board with helping for the event (we even have an intern who’s “Designated Tweeter/Instagrammer/Mobile Upload-er to Facebook” for the night…#Launch4MS!) we have accomplished a lot of the above in such a short amount of time.

The Second: It all comes together as long as you really work hard. Cheesy? A little. But true? Absolutely! My bosses had originally planned on the event being later in the year (thank goodness it was pushed forward so the interns can go!) but with a sudden turn of events (including our partnership with Courtesan)  the party was planned in less than two weeks!

Downtime at your Internship?

Although there’s always something to do at work, I know that sometimes after finishing a project (especially if it’s done faster than my bosses anticipated) I’m left with a bit of free time.

In those instances, here’s a few ideas that I’ve come up with to occupy your time effectively (inspired by Intern Queen’s article on the same topic, which I’ll include at the end of this post).

1) Browse the web: Depending on the specifics of your internship, websites may vary..but I know that as a current Social Media/Digital Marketing Intern I constantly scan http://www.Mashable.com. It’s the social media guru’s version of the New York Times. Speaking of the NYT, you might want to check up on that as well..it’s always good knowing what’s going on in the world. For PR, http://www.prdaily.com is a great start.

-Checking up on PR Firms’ Twitter accounts is always great too. They feature daily tips, inspirational quotes, useful articles and more. Plus, sometimes you’ll even find a good new website to browse!

2) Blog, blog blog!  As I’m doing right now..hehehe. It’s always great to record some of the day’s highlights, as well as the downfalls. Writing things down will help get your mental hamster ball rolling. What did you absolutely love about the day? What cool new things did you learn? Find any great photos or info graphics? Share them! Answering these questions and more are a great way to keep track of your summer internship’s highlights..as well as some of the things you didn’t like much. But that’s okay too, because the negatives can always be improved upon!

3) Ask for more work: It’s not pushy, nor is it annoying (unless, of course, your boss is in the middle of an important phone call). They love to see interns taking initiative, and the more you can get done, the better!

4) Keep Up With Social Media: Depending on whether or not your internship allows you access to the company’s Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter pages and etcetera, you may or may not be able to do this step effectively. I get the passwords for Collective Media and Laffey Fine Homes’ accounts..plus a few of our clients. When I have downtime I pin relevant things to their pinboards, find great articles to post on Facebook, and come up with new Tweets (and reply to people who’ve tweeted at us! Plus it’s always great to thank new followers & always follow back!).
